CHROMA

Experience color!

CHROMA is the latest touring pedagogical exhibition developed by the Cruz-Diez Art Foundation & Articruz in collaboration with Savannah College of Art and Design. The show offers an immersion in the colorful world of Carlos Cruz-Diez. It showcases recent works, specially created for this exhibition to provide an overview of Cruz-Diez’s main concepts and to demonstrate his relentless pursuit of colors in space and time.

It is an invitation to go beyond what we think we know about color. Visitors not only fully engage in the discovery process, they are a key component of the artworks: as they move, they can see colors appear and disappear!

 

The experience continues outside the exhibition room with a series of interventions in the public space, a common practice for Cruz-Diez, who believes that art plays a central role in the city and in the community.

Just like Cruz-Diez’s work, the exhibition is a playful participatory experience. Educational games help visitors to understand the science behind each artwork and 3 animated short movies add to the artworks to explain every part of the artist’s pioneer research and artistic process.

Circumstance & Ambiguity

of Color

Circumstance & Ambiguity of Color is a pedagogical exhibition that the Cruz-Diez Art Foundation loans to museums and institutions all around the world. First presented in Asia in 2010, it has toured cities including Beijing, Shanghai and Seoul before heading to Europe and Latin America.

The exhibition was conceived by Cruz-Diez as a way of gathering a selection of artworks that synthesize his research and showcases them to new audiences. Best suited for medium to large spaces, the exhibition has different modules that can be included or not, depending on the size of the space. It is designed to be entirely bespoke for the venue. Some works are printed and various elements are constructed on-site, reducing crafting, transportation and insurance costs when compared to an exhibition featuring a collection of classical pieces.

 

Aimed at all generations, the exhibition is divided into four distinct sections; ‘Behavior of color’, ‘Environments and immersion’, ‘The artist and the city’ and ’Participation’. It features two-dimensional works as well as Chromosaturation, Environnement Chromointerférent [Chrominterferent Environement], Douches d'Induction Chromatique [Chromatic Induction Showers] and the software Interactive Random Chromatic Experience.

Didactic & Dialectic of Color

Didactic & Dialectic of Color is a historical exhibition designed by Cruz-Diez in 1980. Comprising of 44 printed panels produced by means of a silk screen, four panels hand-drawn by Cruz-Diez and four modular Physichromies - used just for the purposes of learning - it illustrates the theory behind his research. It toured the universities of Venezuela before heading to institutions in the rest of Latin America and Europe.

 

This exhibition was revived in 2011 by the Cruz-Diez Art Foundation using the exact same concept and ideas of the original before embarking on a new tour starting at the Museu de Arte Moderna in Rio, Brazil and in Das Kleine Museum in Germany. It is suitable for all ages, comes ready-made and is available in two formats; 40x40 and 50x50 centimetre panels.

 

Designed for small to medium spaces, through the series of panels placed on the walls visitors can retrace, in a simple and coherent step by step process, the origin and development Cruz-Diez’s investigations on Couleur Additive [Additive Color], Induction Chromatique [Chromatic Induction] and Physichromie. The exhibition is an excellent tool for understanding Cruz-Diez’s research on color.

Cruz-Diez in Black & White

Cruz-Diez in Black & White is a photographic exhibition revealing another side of the artist; that of his passion for photography. Kept hidden in a large archive for some 50 years not to distract from his research on color, it was conceived of first as a book, published by the Cruz-Diez Art Foundation in 2013, before becoming a touring exhibition in Latin America, the United States and Europe following interest from several institutions.

 

As a boy Cruz-Diez was fascinated by the idea of multiplying images, and as he grew up he was drawn to photography, making his own camera at the age of 15 and developing his own prints in a dark room. Wherever he went, he was always with his camera.

 

These photographs capture Cruz-Diez’s travels around Venezuela in the 1940s and life after his move to Europe in the 1950s. They present a well-balanced arrangement of forms, volumes and movements and have the eye of an artist in their composition. Those that know Cruz-Diez’s art well may be surprised to discover photography as another passion and a tool he used both in his academic painting and during his work in journalism and advertising.

 

Cruz-Diez’s archives contain about 3000 negatives from the 1940s to the 1980s, from which 270 were scanned, cleaned and put into high definition. From this selection three different exhibitions have been realized by three different curators. Comprising of social testimony to the societies he witnessed, capturing the richness of Venezuelan folklore and his travels around Europe, curators can tailor the theme of the exhibition to match their personal preference.
